She Wolves at Viterbo

Viterbo University brought an empowering show to the Weber Center through Nov. 9 through 11 with an all-female cast, as well as female director and female stage manager.

Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves came through the town of La Crosse directed by Erin Jerozal and stage managed by Viterbo sophomore Mallory Topel. The show consists of nine soccer players who week by week face challenges that not only shock audiences with the harsh reality of what it means to be a woman but bring them closer together as a single empowering unit of women.

The main cast is made up of Viterbo University students. In this show, Jessica Askey

(sophomore) played the introverted #00, Rachel Munoz (sophomore) played the bubbly, always wanting-to-help #2, Michaela Lee (senior) played the angsty yet caring #7, Lauren Johnson (sophomore) played the Shire loving #8, Katie Bean (junior) played the knowledgeable #11, Zoe Osk (junior) played the team clown #13, Jaki Jahr (senior) played the strong #14 who is best friends with #7, Abbey Iberg (senior) played the team captain #25, Sage Hovet (sophomore) played the new girl #46 and Gemma Cooper (sophomore) played the team’s beloved Soccer Mom.

This show rawly depicts young women figuring out the world around them as well as conversations that feel authentic with the girls sharing opinions and hardships with their fellow teammates. DeLappe’s writing made it easy for the performers to appear on stage naturally, and give the audience a sort of ‘listening in on the girls’ feeling.

Up until the end of the show, the team shows audiences how much of a single unit they truly are, moving together swiftly and unified much like an actual wolf pack. When tragedy strikes at the end of the show, not only do the girls show how strong they can be individually, but also they figure out the new team dynamic, showing the audience how they can and must carry on stronger than before.

DeLappe’s The Wolves is still being performed in theatres across the country and if you did not get a chance to see the show here in La Crosse we in the Fine Arts Center encourage you to get in on this unique theatrical experience.
