Women's JV volleyball loses to UW-L
Women’s JV volleyball, coached by Kelly Aspen and John Ryan, took on UW-L Oct. 16 at R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium. The V-Hawks fell 3-0 to UW-L in sets. The V-Hawks started rough in the first set falling 9-25 to the Eagles. Second and third sets ended with identical scores of 16-25 Eagles. The V-Hawks JV squad wrapped up their season on Oct. 18 against Maryville State University.
The game against the Eagles was not individual players making big plays, but it was a team that was beginning to mesh as one unit, a team that came together at the start of the summer and had to learn how to work together. Since the JV team has a mix of freshmen and sophomores, the leadership falls back onto the varsity team. Both freshmen and sophomores say that “the varsity team has been a huge help” in their development leading to this point in the season.
Along with the coaching staff, the advice from the varsity athletes who have been with the program for years has helped everyone grow as college athletes. “Going into the game the there was a focus on improving our game as a team and preparing for our futures in this program.”
Despite the loss to the Eagles, Ryan Delong, the head varsity coach, has high hopes for the players on the JV team and had nothing but praise about their progression into the future.
When approached for comment, DeLong said, “Kelly and John have done a good job progressing individual’s skills and help them to work as a team on the floor. As the season has progressed, the JV team made up of sophomores and freshmen have begun to blend their games together well in order to play as one unit under the coaching of Kelly and John.” The future of the volleyball team is bright in the eyes of their varsity coach.
