Men's soccer match ends in tie

Viterbo V-Hawks and Maranatha SaberCats line up for the National Anthem

The Viterbo V-Hawks faced the Maranatha Sabercats on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Outdoor Athletic Complex. The first half went quickly despite the lack of scoring. Viterbo spent most of its time defending the goal with Maranatha having the edge in shots, leading to a score of 7-5.

There was a moment of confusion when the sprinklers came on and started watering the field and players when Viterbo stole the ball midfield from the Sabercats. Fortunately, no one tripped on any of the spigots and the game continued.

Shortly into the second half, Viterbo’s Sam Ginther was able to intercept a pass from the Maranatha goalie thus leading to Viterbo’s first and only goal in the game. It was only about ten minutes after the V-Hawks scored that the Sabercat’s Eldiiar Amankulov was able to get a goal on a deflection.

By the end of the second half, neither team was able to break the tie even with Viterbo taking six shots in the final minutes. This led the game into overtime. Both teams took three shots in overtime, but neither scored. The best shot of Viterbo came from Evan Espelien, but it was saved by the opposing team’s goalie.

With the game still tied at the end of overtime, a second overtime period was allotted. During this second overtime, Viterbo had four more opportunities to score, but was unable to follow through.

By the end of the match, Viterbo led with shots, 25-18. Even though the V-Hawks were able to land 10 shots on goal and the Sabercats only landed four, the game ended in double overtime as a tie.
