Men’s basketball: Tichy tops records
Despite the loss the Viterbo men’s basketball team faced on Saturday, February 4, 2019, against Presentation College, 59-65, at R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium. Senior Jason Tichy from Springville, Iowa hit a three-pointer with 16:24 left in the first half to score his 1,000th career point. He became the 35th V-Hawk in Viterbo men's basketball history to do so.
Tichy led the team with 17 points along with seven rebounds. He hit 5-of-10 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws while knocking down a trio of three-pointers. Alongside his teammate, a junior, Tyree Young, from Milwaukee, Wis., who followed with 11 points and seven assists.
“It was definitely a personal goal coming into the season to reach 1,000 points, and it feels good to be up there in terms of points with some of the best to play at Viterbo. I’d like to thank my parents for the continued support over the years coming to almost every game and being by my side,” Tichy stated.
Then again, in Madison, N.D., the Viterbo men's basketball forward Jason Tichy was named the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week by the conference office on Monday. The senior earned his second player-of-the-week award of the season after earning the honor on December 10, 2018.
“For the player of the week recognition - It felt pretty nice but winning the conference tournament in a couple weeks would definitely top the individual award.”
Tichy averaged 20 points and seven rebounds per game over the two games last week. He led the team in scoring in both contests. The senior also tabbed a total of four assists and four steals.
He scored 23 points on 8-of-16 field goal percentage in a 72-75 loss vs. Dickinson State at R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium on Friday. Tichy made two three-pointers and knocked down all five free throw attempts.
