Let’s go to the Opera! Viterbo Presents 'The Old Maid and the Thief'
Viterbo’s production of 'The Old Maid and the Thief' directed by Brett Robison was an unimaginable spectacle.
From the amusing acting, to the elegant, seemingly effortless singing techniques of Alexandra Burch, Joe Lange, Leah Wons and Abigail Hall with suave intervals of Gavin Mason’s narration, this show exceeded all expectations from regular theatre goers who haven’t seen a Viterbo opera before.
Burch hilariously played the very witty maid Laetitia to the uptight lady of the house Miss Todd portrayed admirably by Hall. Wons’ kooky character Miss Pinkerton played opposite of Hall and the two played off each other beautifully to create an abundance of awkward hilarities.
Lange enters the stage as a wanderer named Bob who interrupts the status quo and causes chaos amongst all the women.
What caused such an uproar during their performances was how swooned the ladies were to Bob’s presence, yet he turned out to be an average wandering drunkard and not much more.
The cohesion of the cast was palpable from the audience and led to a joyful theatre experience. Each visual gag was perfectly timed, and there was never a dull moment on stage, which may be contradictory to what people usually expect of an opera.
The next opera that Viterbo will be putting on its feet is 'Hansel and Gretel'.
