A Safe Place to Show off Some Tricks and to Get Some Treats

Every year, Viterbo hosts special events for members of the community to partake in. One of the most recent that took place here on campus was the 10th Annual Safe Trick-or-Treat on October 27th. This family friendly event is for all the children in La Crosse to come onto our campus for a safe Halloween experience. This year there was a record of 1,034 kids in attendance of the event. There are games to play, people to see, and stories to be heard. Many of the volunteers come from Viterbo’s Education Club.

There were a couple of the students who decided to participate in the event last week that wanted to share their experiences. The first person is English Education major Miranda Myszka. Miranda oversaw the Viterbo Snapchat and taking as many pictures of the event as she could. When dorm trick-or-treating was off the table, she helped to create the paper doors for the kids to “knock” on to get candy. You may have seen her on campus dressed as Peter Pan. It was quite the costume.

The next student was Nursing and Spanish major Nolan Gundlach. He volunteered with his friend Alivia Schmidt-Sanders. When asked why he decided to volunteer he said, “[I volunteered] for fun as something to do on a Saturday.” Nolan and Alivia ran the “Pumpkin Bowling” station and rewarded children with candy upon striking the pyramid of toilet paper rolls. When asked about his reaction to volunteering to this event he answered with, “Something that we [Gundlach and Schmidt-Sanders] took away from [the Safe Trick-or-Treat] was seeing how something as simple as a small game can put the biggest smiles on their faces.” In a closing statement, both Miranda and Nolan commented on how volunteering for just a couple hours helped make the day special for the kids and one to remember.
