Philosophy Club: The More You Know
The Philosophy Club is a group of students—most of whom are not philosophy majors—meeting and having snacks while they discuss life, the universe, and pop culture. I would know, I’m the vice president of the club.
The Philosophy Club is open to all students and does not require to you to be well- versed in the subject. All you really know is how to have a friendly conversation about pop culture topics.
Compared to complex theories or thought experiments, pop culture seems much easier to discuss.
For example, on Monday October 8, some of us met up to talk about Avatar: The Last Airbender. The discussion focused on issues such as whether or not it was ethical to use brainwashing to maintain public peace, what kinds of information citizens have a right to know, whether it was better to be prepared or have peace of mind, and whether it would be better to be safe or to be able to express yourself. Fans of the series could probably guess that these questions centered on the events in the city of Ba Sing Se.
The Philosophy Club meets in Murphy 434 at 4:00 p.m. every other Monday. The next meeting is November 5, and it is also planning a movie night Tuesday October 29. There, it will be having a costume contest with a prize awarded for best costume. The club welcomes new members year-round.
