VU After Dark Offers Fun on the Weekends

Feeling bored on a Saturday night? Want to get more involved and maybe check some things off that experience list we all have in the back of our heads? VU After Dark is the club for you.

Viterbo University’s After Dark Club kicked off the semester with several new events including a night hike, open mic night, bingo, casino night, glow in the dark recess, blanket making with V-Hawks for Life, the classic Mission Improvable, Rectoberfest and Survivor night.

“Casino night was great and a lot of fun,” explains Callie Fleming, a sophomore business major. That night, students had the chance to learn roulette, craps, and blackjack in no-stakes games with plastic chips, and people were at the tables who just wanted to help students learn.

Lumen assistant editor CJ Trussoni was in attendance, reporting that “Everyone was so nice. I was on fire at the craps table, but the blackjack cards weren’t as nice to me.”

Any one of these events is a great opportunity to learn a new trick, relieve some stress and make some new friends. Want to know the best part? It does not cost a thing! Only your attendance is needed.

Even though casino night was a riot, some nights can be a bust for the club if there is not much attendance, such as the night of glow in the dark recess.

“Only a couple people showed up. I was kind of bummed,” states Fleming.

If you are one of those students who has not attended an event by this club, do not be afraid to jump right in. Do not let those preconceived notions about boring activities stop you. You have to attend to be a part of the fun.

VU After Dark also arranged the classic Mission Improvable for Family Weekend September 22. This Mission included an improv group from Chicago that performed an audience-interactive show for an hour during the evening. The group performed all sorts of improv games and focused much on audience participation. For backup on the audience support, the group added actors, actresses and inspiration to encourage participation and promote their games.

“There was rarely a moment where I wasn’t laughing hysterically or waiting for the next clever thing to happen,” explains Faith Bartelt, a vocal performance major who was thankful to be a part of the action working the event.

“Super blown away and would one hundred percent recommend to others,” Bartelt stated.

The club works hard to include the suggestions and ideas of the student body and work even harder to make sure those ideas are brought to life. The schedule of events for October has already filled.

The most intriguing week will be the one prior to Halloween. October 26 includes night tours of the scariest places on campus, including the infamous seventh floor to Bonaventure that is said to glow red some nights.

The next night includes a duo event with the Student Activities Board, setting up and running Viterbo’s mischievous haunted house. Both groups work hard to make the place realistic. The house includes creepy noises and splattered walls. What exactly is splattered on the walls, you ask? I’ll let you figure it out for yourself. As for the living and non-living beings you might find lurking in the house…beware.
