The End of an Era: Vandenberg Discusses Long Career at Viterbo
“Came just an eyelash from going to the national tournament,” Vandenberg explains. “That was a fun process and kind of the goal, like let’s get this thing moving in five years, and we were able to do that.”
She also recalled some of the more memorable seasons she oversaw. Vandenberg stated that the highest the women’s basketball team ever ranked was in the 2000-01 season, when they were number four in the country. However, she did not say that was her most rewarding season. That honor went to the 2004-05 team.
“Our team started out 5-14, but I always believed in that team,” she explains. “We ended up turning it around and sharing the conference title, winning the conference tournament and going to nationals that year. That was probably the most rewarding season of my time at Viterbo.”
As for what comes next for the former coach, she explained she is going to start her master’s degree in Viterbo’s Servant Leadership program this November: “It’s not something to increase my career, but just part of a personal journey.” She has had this idea in the back of her head for some time, and her retirement from the sports program provided a good opportunity to follow through and start the program.
Vandenberg also shared what she wanted people to know as she closes this chapter in her life by stating, “The biggest thing I want everyone to know is that I love this university,” she explains. “I’ve been really blessed with great colleges in the faculty, staff and administration, and I really believe in the school and its values. That’s the biggest thing, and I love the FSPA. It’s been a good fit for me, obviously, I’ve been here a quarter of a century (laugh). It’s been a great experience for me.”
We at the Lumen wish Bobbi Vandenberg luck with the next chapter of her life.
