Inside the Career Fair
On September 17, Viterbo University’s Career Services hosted a career fair. There, students could talk to and connect with representatives from various organizations. The purpose of the event was to provide students with the opportunity to speak and possibly network with representatives for future opportunities. I spoke to four different students to discuss why they came to the fair, and what they got out of the experience.
Zachary Schmit is a freshman biology major. He learned about the fair through his teacher and VU Today.
“I wanted to get my foot in the door in a few locations for interning opportunities,” Schmit explains about why he wanted to attend the event. He got the opportunity to talk to a couple of representatives who, in turn, offered valuable insight into his intended field and was very satisfied from his time at the career fair.
William Mancini is a senior management and leadership major. “I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life,” he explains. By attending the event, Mancini wanted to “find a good fit” for himself regarding career choice. He talked to several of the companies present at the career fair and took several business cards from companies such as Petrochemical and Windcraft. He was satisfied with his experience and accomplished what he needed.
Cassi Vaassen and Allie Biba are both junior nursing majors, and both were looking for internships in their field. When asked if they had found what they were looking for, one of them responded that they “saw a few programs that caught our interest.”
I went to the career fair to discuss graduate school, and only one of the universities attending had a serious English program. While I am not interested in actually going to Marquette University, I was very interested in getting an idea of what graduate programs were looking for in students.
While I cannot say for certain if the career fair helped everyone who stepped into that gymnasium, it was certainly beneficial to me and the students I interviewed.
