V-Hawks Softball Gets into the Swing of Things Against Mayville

Sophomore Bailey Thur played a major role in the series of three wins against Mayville with her strong offense as a V-Hawk.

Although the V-Hawks had a slow start to their season, they really picked it up this past weekend against Mayville State University. In a series of four home games, the V-Hawks won the last three and started to turn their record around.

Game one against Mayville State (11-3) was slow for the V-Hawks (8-19), who scored only two runs throughout the game: one in the third inning and the other in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mayville State scored at least one run in every inning after the first, ending up with a final score of 8-2 as the only loss of the weekend for VU Softball.

Game two on Friday afternoon went much better for the V-Hawks (9-19) in their series against Mayville State (11-13). The V-Hawks scored four runs right away in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a series of good at bats. Lauren Davis took a walk which scored a run, Bailey Thur followed with a 2-run base hit and another run scored. In the second, the V-Hawks held Mayville State again through the second inning. Viterbo scored another four runs in the bottom of second thanks to RBI’s from Elli Anderson and Bailey Thur. Viterbo put another run on the board in the fourth, making the score 9-0. Although Mayville State put six runs on the board throughout the remainder of the game, it wasn’t enough to defeat the V-Hawks – ending the game 9-6.

On the second day of the weekend series against Mayville State (11-14), the V-Hawks (10-19) scored a total of nine runs compared to Mayville’s five runs. Mayville was up 3-1 against the V-Hawks in the top of the fourth, but Viterbo battled back and scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by another three runs in the fifth. Mayville State scored another one in the sixth, but it was countered by a run by the V-Hawks in the sixth as well. Game one of day two ended as another win for the V-Hawks, with a final score of 9-5.

Game two of the second day series for the V-Hawks (11-19) against Mayville State (11-15) went very well as VU scored early and held the lead from the beginning. The game started off hot for the V-Hawks with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Mayville battled back, scoring three in the third. Viterbo followed with another run in the third inning, but Mayville tied it up with a run in the fourth. Heading into the ninth inning with a tied game, there was a lot of pressure on both teams. Luckily, Viterbo was able to score thanks to a bunted in RBI from Lauren Davis to win the game 5-4 for the V-Hawks.

The results from this past weekend were crucial for Viterbo’s Softball program, improving the team’s record from 8-18 up to 11-19. With the Lady V-Hawks on the rise this spring, all support is welcome at the upcoming home games against the Cardinal Stritch Wolves (13-10) on Thursday, April 6.
