On Saturday, December 3 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, December 4 at 2:00 PM, Viterbo University’s music department presented George Frideric Handel’s Messiah. This was presented at the Fine Arts Center in the Main Theatre in order to celebrate the holiday season.
The Messiah is an extremely popular production that is familiar to most people. For many people it represents the holiday period, especially the “Hallelujah Chorus,” which was in Part II of the production this weekend. Part I involved the Christmas portion of Handel’s composition. Brett Robison was in charge of the production of this Messiah, and tried to make the music as authentic as possible.
Viterbo's production involved students, La Crosse community members, and employees. The production included Viterbo’s concert choir, soloists and an orchestra. They also had many hours of practice to perfect the production by rehearsing throughout the month of November. Some of the soloists include Emma Woods, who sang “Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion!” Hunter Evenson sang two solos for the performance.
The production was a success and was made possible with the hard work of the performers and sponsorship from Gundersen and WXOW TV-19.
